Stuart Gray said he was satisfied after seeing his team battle to a 1-1 draw at Darlington in the FA Cup first round on Saturday.

"I wanted a response from the players after what happened on Tuesday and I think I got that," he said.

"It was backs to the wall stuff early on after we conceded a goal and Chris Doig had to go off but full credit to the players they responded well in adversity.

"I always knew it was going to be a tough game. Darlington haven't lost at home in the league this season and I'm just pleased we are in the hat for the second round draw.

"I think it always looked like the game was going to end in a draw but credit to the back four, I think we defended well. I think we perhaps had the better of the possession in their half but maybe we didn't quite have that final ball to open them up enough.

"We are in the second round draw but the job isn't done yet and we know that the replay will be another tough game but hopefully we can start putting our home form right again.

"Chris Doig has picked up a recurrence of the knee injury he had in pre-season and that could keep him out for quite a while. That is a major blow for us and with Mark Hughes suspended next week as well we are definitely going to have to look at our options. I'll definitely be putting a few calls in this week to try and strengthen the squad.

"We were bitterly disappointed with Tuesday's performance but I think the players have responded well. A lot of the players let themselves down on Tuesday and I just felt I needed to shake things up a bit. That's why I made the changes that I did and I think the players that came in did well. No one ever goes out to play badly but for me on Tuesday the disappointing thing was that we got outworked.

"We went 4-3-3 today, Colin Larkin came in up front and he did a job. We've always told the players to shoot if they get the opportunity and Colin has got his rewards for doing that with his goal.

"It was windy and the conditions were difficult to try and play good football so it was a case of coming here, showing a good attitude and getting a professional result. It might not have been pretty but we are still in the competition and that's the most important thing."
