Northampton Town travelled to meet Millwall in this Coca-Cola League One fixture. For the Cobblers a minor hamstring strain ruled out Andy Holt, so Danny Jackman returned to the side after a knee injury. Wolves loan man Daniel Jones was also fit again, and he was among the substitutes. Striker Poul Hubertz was named in the side to face his former club.
Huge traffic delays that affected the Cobblers team bus, many travelling supporters and some of the Millwall players meant the kick off was put back 15 minutes. Even with the assistance of a police escort the Cobblers team bus was unable to negotiate the delays in time for a prompt start.
The Cobblers suffered an early injury blow when Chris Doig had to limp off. He was replaced by Daniel Jones. The disastrous start continued on 12 minutes when Alan Dunne rose to head home a Jay Simpson cross from the right.
The Cobblers injury problems worsened when Jason Crowe hobbled off and was replaced by Joe Burnell.
Mark Hughes was twice denied in front of goal by last ditch blocks from the Lions defence after he met a Daniel Jones corner, but soon afterwards the lead was doubled when a short corner from Dave Brammer was only half cleared and Paul Robinson stooped to head home at the far post.
Hughes was the first player to be booked when he caught Andy Frampton in the closing stages of the first half.
The Cobblers began the second half on the front foot, creating a number of half chances as they looked for a way back into the game.
Andy Kirk fired an effort wide from the edge of the box on 64 minutes, before Millwall's first change saw Will Hoskins replace Gary Alexander.
Mark Bunn made a good save to punch away a shot from Ali Fuseini, before Chris Hackett replaced Jay Simpson.
Both sides made changes on 77 minutes, Ian Henderson replaced Andy Kirk for the Cobblers while Jamie O'Hara came on for Dave Brammer for Millwall.
Colin Larkin's shot from a Hubertz cross was held by Douglas on 82 minutes, while a header from the same player following good work by Ian Henderson was straight at the Millwall keeper.
Bradley Johnson was booked for pulling back his man as the game entered it's closing moments, before a Larkin cross was deflected behind.
To complete a miserable night, Poul Hubertz was booked in the final seconds meaning he will miss the trip to Luton Town on Monday October 15th.
Although the Cobblers had enjoyed the better of the second half, the damage was done in the first period and Stuart Gray's side suffered their first defeat in 6 league games.
