ANDY DOING THE BUSINESS
My assertion in the match report for the Walsall Cup game that criticism of Andy Kirk at this stage of the season is 'nonsensical' seems to have stirred up some healthy debate.
The game is all about opinions, and at the Chron we welcome - and print - them all, even if they are contrary to what our writers believe.
The crux of the criticism for Kirk this season is that he is not bringing enough else to the team, that, overlooking the fact that he has scored 11 goals so far this season, he is not playing for the team.
In the face of such comments I stand by my verdict of nonsense. To hear such things reminds me of a comment I overheard when shuffling out of Sixfields many years ago after an end-of-season pasting at the hands of Walsall.
They were on their way up, while the Cobblers had just about secured their league safety under Kevin Wilson, and Brett Angell scored three times in a 3-0 win.
"Apart from the hat-trick, what else did he contribute in that game?" I remember one supporter saying to another.
You can't have it both ways. Scott McGleish used to get a lot of - also inaccurate - stick for trying to do too much for the team, for his willingness to drop into midfield and tackle people.
It was a modus operandi that helped the striker become the first player to break the 20-goal mark for the club in their promotion season.
At his current scoring rate, and barring any mishaps on the injury front, Kirk could also go through that barrier this season.
