SAMPSON HAPPY WITH RESERVES WORK OUT
Cobblers reserve team coach Ian Sampson was pleased to see Giles Coke complete the game against Peterborough on Tuesday but he feels that the midfielder is probably still at least another second string game away from being able to challenge for a place in the first team.
"I was pleased to see Giles Coke come through the 90 minutes but I still think he needs at least one more reserve game before he'll hopefully then be ready to challenge for a place in the first team," said Sampson.
"I could have probably taken him off after 80 minutes because he was flagging a little bit but having completed the full 90 that is psychologically a major plus for both him and the club.
"I think it was a bit of a scrappy game really, they put us under the cosh for the first 20 minutes but we got a bit stronger towards the end of the first half.
"We didn't test their goalkeeper at all in the first half and we started the second half slowly as well but I think we totally dominated the last half an hour and could have maybe even won it at the end.
"Sam Aiston did really well for the goal and I think he had a good game. He was very lively, he put some good crosses into the box and his all round performance was first class.
"Joe Benjamin took his goal well and I thought every time he got the ball he looked a threat. He perhaps needed to show a bit more composure in front of goal and if he'd done that he could have maybe even got himself a hat-trick.
"Brett Johnson was strong, he got through the game OK and he now obviously comes into contention for Saturday's game at Crewe.
"Marcin Adamski did well. He started off a bit slowly, he looked a bit rusty and his communication was obviously a bit of a problem but after that sorted itself out I thought he did very well.
"I think the younger lads that have come into the reserves this season have done OK in spurts but they need to find that consistency. They are obviously all keen to impress and every game is a big learning curve for them.
"They know that they need to impress because if they don't then consequently they won't get a contract but if they do impress they'll have every chance of staying here."
