Stuart Gray made two further additions to his new look Cobblers squad at the beginning of August with Daniel Jones signed on loan from Wolves until January and Poul Hubertz snapped up on a 12-month contract following his release from League One rivals Millwall.

The Cobblers final pre-season fixture was the Maunsell Cup final against Rushden & Diamonds at Nene Park. Goals from Bradley Johnson, Colin Larkin and Ian Henderson secured a comfortable 3-0 victory for the Cobblers as they headed into the new League One season on a high.

In the build up to the first game of the season Joe Howe's brief Sixfields stay came to an end with the young midfielder released from his short-term contract while in the first round draw of the Johnstone's Paint Trophy the Cobblers were handed a tricky looking away tie at local rivals Luton Town.

The first game of the season, against promoted Swindon Town at Sixfields, ended in a 1-1 draw with Andy Kirk's 9th minute opener cancelled out by a Christian Roberts penalty just before half-time.

Just three days later and it was two in two for Kirk as his goal, added to Bradley Johnson's free-kick, helped the Cobblers beat Millwall 2-0 at Sixfields in the first round of the Carling Cup. The reward for that win was a second round tie at Middlesbrough later in the month.

Back to the league and the Cobblers suffered a disappointing 2-1 defeat at Brighton. Kirk was again on target but the Seagulls won an ill-tempered game thanks to an early Dean Hammond penalty and a goal from former Cambridge United frontman Alex Revell.

Lloyd Owusu then grabbed an injury time winner for Yeovil 7 days later as the Cobblers suffered back-to-back 2-1 defeats. Poul Hubertz scored his first goal for the club to cancel out Justin Cochrane's initial effort and despite the Cobblers hitting the woodwork three times it was Russell Slade's side who stole all three points.

Back to the cup and goals from Fabio Rochemback and Lee Dong Gook saw the Cobblers far from disgraced in a 2-0 defeat against Middlesbrough at the Riverside. Young midfielder Alex Dyer made his Town debut against the Premier League side while Jason Crowe made his 100th appearance for the Cobblers.

In transfer news and the Cobblers made one signing on deadline day with experienced midfielder Alex Russell joining on an initial one-month loan deal from Bristol City. Cobblers winger Sam Aiston meanwhile joined Blue Square Premier side Burton Albion on a loan deal to run until the end of October.

Having played just three league games, the Cobblers ended the month 19th in the embryonic League One table.
