The Cobblers kicked off September with a pulsating 2-2 draw at Leyton Orient.

Stuart Gray's side were 2-0 up at Brisbane Road thanks to goals from Poul Hubertz and Chris Doig but Orient, who had won their opening three league games, struck twice early on in the second half through first Adam Chambers and then Tamika Mkandawire.

The Cobblers then exited the Johnstone's Paint Trophy at the first round stage with a 2-0 defeat at Luton, experienced duo Don Hutchison and Paul Peschisolido on target for the Hatters.

Just three days later and in a Friday night clash at Sixfields, Town recorded their first league win of the season against one of the pre-season promotion favourites, Doncaster Rovers. Both of the goals came in the second half with Andy Kirk's fourth of the season adding to a great strike from Ryan Gilligan.

The following Saturday and the Cobblers continued their mini-unbeaten run in the league with a 1-1 draw at Bournemouth, substitute Colin Larkin grabbing a 78th minute equaliser after former England midfielder Darren Anderton had given the home side the lead.

Poul Hubertz, Andy Holt and Andy Kirk were then all on target the following weekend as the Cobblers good month continued with a comfortable 3-0 home victory over Huddersfield Town.

Ironically the last game of the month, like the first, ended in a 2-2 draw on the road with Tranmere this time coming from 2-0 down to deny the Cobblers victory. Andy Kirk and Poul Hubertz were again on the scoresheet for the Cobblers but Chris Shuker pulled one back for the home side midway through the second half before Gareth Taylor snatched an equaliser just two minutes from time.

Despite that late equaliser up at Prenton Park it had been a good month for the Cobblers and they ended it 11th in the table, three points off the play-offs and three points clear of the relegation zone.
